About Me

I don’t look back darling. It distracts from the now.

My name is Emilie Martin, I am 19 years old and I am from White Rock, British Columbia. White Rock is a small town just an hour south of Vancouver. I have older twin sisters Madeleine and Giulia who are 21 years old. I have the most amazing parents in the world, Elly and John. We have a dog, her name is Isla and she is a Vizsla, a Hungarian hunting dog.

Family definitely means the most in my life and I feel very fortunate to have such a great one. Growing up with sisters who are twins was actually quite lonely sometimes. They were each others best friend and I always felt like an outsider which why I have such a close and special relationship with my younger cousin, Sophie. We’ve been best friends from the beginning and I love her like she is my sister.

In high school I was never a big fan of joining clubs however, I was really into sports. I played on multiple sports team like soccer, lacrosse and volleyball. Also in high school I went on two exchange trips. One to Quebec in grade 9 and one to Costa Rica in grade 11. I absolutely love traveling but I really haven’t been many place. I’ve mostly just travelled around British Columbia. I’m also a very outdoorsy type of person. Being from B.C, I’m always trying to find somewhere to hike, ski or to mountain bike. My favourite place in B.C so far is Tofino. Last year after Christmas, my family and I decided to go to Tofino for a week. It was the most beautiful place and the food was absolutely amazing!

Another interest of mine is food. I am OBSESSED with food! From food trucks, cafes, high end restaurants or sketchy places I am always down to try something new. Food and cooking have just always been a huge part of my life because of my family heritage passed down from my grandmaman. My grandmaman is French Canadian and my nonno was Italian. My grandmaman instilled a love in me for cooking at a young age that I now consider a passion. My absolute favourite thing to do is go to any interesting food place and get their most popular menu item. Vancouver’s food options are diverse and so intertwined with the many different cultures seen in the city. My favourite part about food is that food is everywhere but it is the culture that is comes from that makes it so different. You’re not only learning about the dish itself but the culture it was made from and how that affected the way it’s made, the ingredients used or how it should be eaten.

Because of my love for food, when I thought about what I wanted to study in university I knew it had to be something that involved food. That’s when I came across the food and nutrition program at Brescia. I had started becoming more interested in nutrition and how to live a healthy lifestyle. I am a huge believer that a healthy life starts with what you eat and I was very excited to learn about that. However, after struggling through first year chemistry courses, I decided this was not the course for me. I had really enjoyed my business course, which led me to BMOS food management which I am in now. I am really enjoying this program and I am excited to see where it’s going to take me in the future because I am still not entirely sure what I want to do with my life.

When I am not doing homework or in class, I try my hardest to motivate myself to go to the gym. In high school, I never needed to go to the gym because I was so active because of sports. In university though, I’ve found it really hard to stay active. It’s still a work in progress but I am trying to get to the gym as much as I can because I really do enjoy working out. I am always listening to music or a podcast. I’m not a huge fan of books but I’ve watch almost every TV series on Netflix. I am a fan of pretty much every genre of music out there. As long as it’s a good song I’ll like it, but country is hands down my favourite genre of music. My dad grew up on a farm in Brandon, Manitoba and listened to country as a kid. He introduced me to it, but it wasn’t until high school that I really got into it. It was in grade 9 on my exchange to Quebec where I saw Keith Urban live and I absolutely fell in love with his music. I only knew one song but I had the time of my life so it didn’t matter that I didn’t know the lyrics. This past summer was the best because I went to Rockin’ River music festival in Merritt, B.C. It’s a four day all country music festival. My friends and I camped all four days and had the most amazing time! I saw so lots of great artists like, Maren Morris, Kane Brown, Jason Aldean and so many more!

Some of my other favourite artists today are Lewis Capaldi, James Bay, Kacey Musgraves and Luke Combs. Pride and Prejudice and Dirty Dancing are my two favourite movies of all time, I could watch them any day. I haven’t read many books however, “The Summer I Turned Pretty” by Jenny Han is a book that I’ve read many times. It’ll make you cry and laugh all at the same time.

I hope this blog post has helped you learn a little bit more about me! Feel free to leave any comments, thoughts or replies down below.

  1. It’ so amazing how food is such a big part of everyone’s lives as it is in all cultures! My mom is from the Philippines and a big part of that culture is cooking as a family and passing down all the recipes to the daughters so I have for sure learned a lot and have a passion for cooking and baking.

  2. Thanks for sharing part of your story with us Emilie. It’s wonderful that your passion for food brought you all the way from BC to Brescia. My first concert ever was Garth Brooks when I was about 13 so I understand how a country concert could get you hooked on the genre. I look forward to getting to know you better throughout the term.

  3. I admire your transition with changing programs from Foods & Nutrition to BMOS. I definitely agree for not knowing what exactly you want to do after undergrad. But I love how you live in the moment which is something I try to tech myself everyday. I also have two younger sisters and can’t imagine what I would do without them. Family is also important to me and you are super lucky you have twin sisters. That much be fun to watch! Your traveling pictuers inspire me to visit British Columbia someday. Also you are super photogenic and I really enjoyed looking at your VSCO. 🙂
