When first deciding to take Business Communications 2250, I did not know what kind of content I was going to be learning. I am very pleased to say that I think that the skills I learned during my time in this class will prove to be extremely beneficial for my professional success in the future. I did not realize that I needed to learn how to write a formal email to my employer, or how a few icons and different font sizes could completely change a powerpoint presentation. These skills do not seem very important at first but now I understand how knowing these simple improvements are going to help me in other classes and my future career.

Firstly, I want to talk about how this class will benefit me in terms of giving oral presentations. I have never been a good oral presenter so when my group for my Business 2257 class begun practicing the presentation portion of the feasibility project, I did not volunteer to present.

I was scared that I was going to hold us back and potentially ruin it since there is also the competition to be nominated to present at Ivey. I now really regret not volunteering because over these past few classes I’ve realized that I need to get over my fear and take advantage of every oral presentation opportunity I have. However, since my group is moving forward to present in front of Ivey, I will now be a part of the presentation. I am excited to use the skills I have learned in this class to crush the presentation!
When we were assigned our blog assignment, I was feeling uneasy about it at first because I am quite uncomfortable talking about myself to strangers. So, creating a blog about myself using my words and my opinions stressed me out. I tried to get out of my comfort zone and push myself to open up on these blog posts. It’s truly surprising how comfortable I am after only three blog posts. Reading how positive all the comments were on all my blog posts has built confidence in me about my writing.

Being in the active learning classroom has been the most valuable part of this class. It has been really interesting not only learning from course material but also learning from communicating with my classmates.

Doing exercises such as writing on the whiteboards and having open conversations in class has opened my eyes to the variety of cultures and values similar university students have. It has taught me to appreciate talking and learning from others. I find it extremely hard in some lectures to give all my focus during class. However, being in this environment has allowed me to give my full attention to retain valuable information from each class.
As a result of taking this class, I will most definitely value working with individuals that I do not know. By switching seats a few times during this class, I have met some awesome people, however, at first, I was hesitant. If I were to do something different in this class, I would have been a lot more open and willing to communicate from the classmates I didn’t know before this class. Another valuable relationship I will be taking away from this class is the professor-student relationship I now have with Melissa. Because of her teaching style and positive attitude in class, it has been very easy for me to participate in class knowing that my opinion matters to her. She has created such a safe environment for everyone and I always feel comfortable going to her for help.

I’ve learned a lot about myself and what kind of person I want to be in a professional environment. The most important thing I think that I’ve learned about myself is that I am very capable of achieving success on my own and I should credit my success to anyone but myself. I think a lot of the time I don’t believe in myself as much as I should. In the professional world confidence is the biggest key to success. After taking this class, I now have all the necessary tools to believe in myself and to strongly portray self-confidence. I also believe that the skills I’ve learned in this class I will be able to use to excel in all my other business classes. This class has taught me the basic yet extremely important skills needed to become a successful businesswoman in my future career. I am extremely grateful for the content that this class offered because without it I don’t think I would have thought twice about learning these topics.
Hey Emilie! Overall, I really liked the layout of your blog post, it looks really clean! I think after reading your post, I learned that its okay to be uncomfortable with talking in front of strangers, but to own it the best you can! I think you can relate, so I hope this class has helped you come out of your shell a bit 🙂

Hi Emilie, I found we got something in common like feeling uncomfortable with the blog post at first and worried a lot about presentation. And it is nice to see you got some improvement in skills as well as confidence. I improved because I know I have to do so and I can really learn that trans knowledge I learned into confidence I can use from you.
